The Goble Tavern Presents:Blues Under The WillowsSaturday, September 8th - Noon till 9:00 pm A Benefit Concert to Promote OSHU Research For Parkinson's And Movement Disorders |
Saturday, September 8th is the day. The Goble Tavern in Goble, OR (5
miles north of St. Helens) is the place. The curious little roadside
attraction will slam your volcano.
Portland bassist, Jon Nyberg, is on a mission. Jon's playing career stopped in 1993. "Parkinsononian," they told him. "Degenerative ...no cure yet ...take your lumps, research could take years." Players don't know how to give up. As a kid, in the 60's, Jon worked in the Deep South, performing with Bobby "Blue" Bland, Jimmy Reed, and Cajun phenomena, Alan Collay. But, being a full-time musician has its own set of slings and arrows, and Nyberg learned early on, when you hit a roadblock you break it down or go around it. This was just another roadblock, albeit, the size of Mt. St. Helens.
His worst enemy was time, but time is meter and not something you park beside. It was time, he figured, to get his butt in gear and pick up the tempo. So, if Nyberg takes this research game personally, there's a reason.
Recently, OHSU told him that the first $50K he raised will be matched by an anonymous donor. That was a challenge he couldn't refuse. Net proceeds from the September 8th Festival will go directly to OHSU and their Parkinson's and Movement Disorder Research.
Blues Under The Willows busts out of the gate with guitarist, Robbie Laws' band, followed by a half dozen of the area's greatest string doctors. Ticket sales are limited to about 300, but the lineup is awesome. Performing back to back, these artists will be implanting their musical stem lines into those lucky enough to get a seat.
The Feppo Brothers Band, a six-piece ball of fire, (whose name you are going to hear a lot) might just steal the show. Larry Adair, the veteran player, teacher, and guitar guru, has his own bag of tricks. Always unpredictable, even the young wizards will be looking at him for a new lick or two.
Then, right around 4:00 pm - here comes Paul deLay with Janice Scroggins, Peter Dammann and Kelly Dunn strutting their stuff straight up to the intermission and the Harp Blow-Off. Bill Rhoades is the special guest for this mini version of the original harmonica shoot-out. The "best of the best" harp-slingers going up against the master include, Johnnie Ward, Paul-Zilla and Lenny Pitts. But wait, it's not over yet. Now, the people too damn lazy to play for 10 years have finally dug themselves up - Dr. Jazz, the original swing version, will take the stage one more time. At the end of all this will be the All-Star Invisible "Lonesome George" Global Orchestra, who will play a stretch of madness and variety until the plug is pulled! We'll see you there!
Advance tickets go for $5 Gen. Adm. and $10 for the 1st seven rows. For more info, call or stop by The Goble Tavern (503) 556-4090. To purchase via credit card (503) 397-3667.
