Here's a show Blues fans won't want to pass up, especially Blues guitar
fans! A. C. Porter & Robbie Laws, along
with the Cascade Blues Association, present the First Annual Blues
Guitar SlamA-Rama (and Cinco de Mayo Party). This very special
event is set for Sunday evening, May 5th at The Roseland Grill,
located on the corner of 6th & Burnside in downtown Portland. (Note:
this is a change of venue from what was announced last month).
Portland has always been a prolific Blues guitar town and this event will ".showcase" many of the finest Blues "axe handlers" the Rose City and the Northwest has to offer, including many multi-CBA "Muddy Award" winners and CBA "Hall Of Famers".
Slated to perform at the first annual Slam-A-Rama are Jim Mesi, Lloyd Jones, Henry Cooper and Robbie Laws. Also on this great bill will be a "very special guest", from the Bay area, the legendary Bluesman, CHRIS CAIN. Plus, as a bonus to this rare evening of impressive Blues guitar, will be some superb local "guitar wizards", the likes of Stu Kinzel, Suburban Slim, Josh Fulero, A.C. Porter, as well as some additional invited guests. And, if all that's not enough, check out this "killer" house band for the evening's festivities: CBA "Muddy Award" winners, Ed Neumann (Jim Mesi Band) on keyboards and Albert Reda (Terry Robb Band) on bass, plus The Fabulous Thunderbirds' drummer, Jimi Bott. Wow! Is that a premium lineup for an early Sunday evening show, or what? Can ya handle all that!
Jim Mesi, Lloyd Jones, and Robbie Laws need no introduction to local Blues fans. They all front very successful and very popular Blues bands and each is a "guitar hero" in his own right. Henry Cooper, who now resides in Seattle, is a top-notch Blues guitar player who played in the Portland area with the highly popular group, The Terraplanes, in the late-'80s and early-`90s. Henry also played with the Duffy Bishop Band. He's a stunning slide guitar player and heads up his own hugely popular Blues band in the Emerald City.
With guitar master, Chris Cain on the show's bill too, it makes
thus guitar extravaganza a "must see" evening of music for every Blues
fan. Chris just doesn't get to town that often. He's a
marvelous performer with guitar chops most players would kill robe able to
perform and he has a distinctive voice that has always been compared to the
"King Of The Blues," BB King, (it doesn't get
much better than that). A quote from Chris' website says it
all: "Chris Cain's .Jazz-tinged, Blues-soaked guitar
and deep, warm vocals have the maturity and authenticity of Bluesmen many times
his senior. His expressive style is the result of a lifetime of study and the
relentless pursuit of music mastery." You can check out Chris
Cain's website at: chriscain.cc.
When talking with A.C. Porter, the show's promoter (and a fine guitar player to boot), about the Slam-A-Rama he said, "We're gonna mix it up a lot! We may start the set with a "fixed" two players, but then, we will pull someone off and throw in a different player opposite the other "fixed" one without the players knowing when they will be pulled, or called up. And, we'll rotate the players as evenly as possible throughout the four or five sets! This, I hope, should keep the audience interested and hearing different styles and combinations, and also keep the players on their toes and thinking. Should be fun!" A. C. continues, "The exception to this will be when we get the headliner, Chris Cain, up on stage for his set. Chris will remain there the entire time and we'll have two players rotate opposite him. One will be Lloyd Jones, and the other is a surprise!"
Tickets for the Slam-A-Rama are $17 advance, $20 at the door through FASTIXX, 503-224TIXX (8499). They will take Visa/ Mastercard. CBA Members can get discounted tickets through A.C. Porter or Robbie Laws ($15) before the day of show. A.C. will be selling them at that price at the Membership meeting on May 1st, or you can call A.C., 503 236-3756, or e-mail him at acblueguitar@hotmail.com.
Note: Chris Cain will be playing PIANO and SINGING SOLO (NO GUITAR or BAND!) at the Tugboat Brewpub on Saturday, May 4th.
See ya at the Slam-A-Rama!
