The Annual Membership Picnic!

Sunday, August 25th, 2002
Tomahawk Bay Moorage at Jantzen Beach

Music! Food! Giveaways! Fun!

K.G. Jackson & Rob Landahl will perform at the picnic.

The Cascade Blues Association will once again hold its Annual Summer Membership Picnic at the Tomahawk Bay Moorage at Jantzen Beach on Sunday, August 25th from noon 5:30pm. For the third year in a row, Brad Howton (Columbia Crossings Properties and Tomahawk Bay Moorage) has graciously donated his land to us for our picnic. The address is 515 NE Tomahawk Island Dr. (Click here for a map; on the map page, click "Get Directions" to get specific directions from your location.) Quick directions: From I-5 north take exit number 308 at JANTZEN BEACH, curve RIGHT which turns into N. TOMAHAWK ISLAND DR. continue through the intersection and follow N. Tomahawk Island Dr. to the very end. The parking lot and picnic area will be located approximately 1-2 miles down the road on your left. From 1-5 south, take exit 308 at Jantzen Beach, cross under the freeway to the East Side of 1-5 and follow the above directions. Tomahawk Island Dr. is the street that runs along the north side of the Jantzen Beach Safeway parking lot.

The CBA will be picking up the tab for the BBQ, with other donations and services provided by Gene Cavenaile / Starshine Sound (Sound/Stage crew); Big Dave / QuickSilver (stage donation); and Portland Brewing (yummy beer). Potluck food items such as hot dishes, salads, chips and desserts will be provided by YOU, the CBA members. Our request is that everyone bring a potluck item to share. We've made it real easy to figure out what you need to bring by matching up food categories to the first letter of your last name — just follow the list below:

1st letter of last name
Type of food
A-C
Hot Dishes
D-H
Chips, Dips or Veggies
I-M
Goodies/Desserts
N-Z
Salads

In the past few years, we've had anywhere from 200 to almost 400 people show up for the picnic and partake in the eating frenzy. Without everyone bringing something to share, we run short of potluck items. The hungry CBA members thank you in advance for your potluck items.

As always, there will be live Blues throughout the day, and this year's musical lineup will include, in no particular order: K.G. Jackson & Rob Landahl, Kinzel & Hyde Band & Guests, Bob Shoemaker & Blue Healers, and national recording artists Steve James & Del Rey. As always, the musicians are generously donating their time and talents to play at our picnic, so I urge you to help support these fine folks by bringing some extra dough to purchase a CD or two.

Bob Shoemaker will also perform.

Here's what to expect: Free BBQ & yummy potluck items, free pop, beer, plus children's entertainment and adult piñatas. The lovely Dee Koch will be working her magic fingers by providing massages for a small monetary donation. We will be having a silent auction this year. Then there's THE GIVEAWAYS! We have door prizes galore and a buck-a-ticket special multi-package CD "Winner Take All" Event Fund drawing. We will also have the drawing for the signed guitar that we had on display at the Waterfront Blues Festival and at our membership meeting. The guitar is signed by several Blues Guitar Greats who have played Portland this past year, including Sonny Rhodes, Tim 'Too Slim' Langford, Johnny Rawls, Rod Price, Robert Lowery, Phillip Walker, Elvin Bishop, Jimmy Burns, Anson Funderburgh, Clarence 'Gatemouth' Brown and Maurice John Vaughn. Tickets for the guitar drawing are just a $1 donation per chance, and since the proceeds will go to benefit the Christopher Mesi Memorial Music Scholarship and other CBA yearly events, we urge you to enter as many times as you can. Who knows, you may be this year's lucky winner and take home a few CD's or the guitar. This year we will also be taking cash donations for the Rainbow Project, which benefits youth at risk.

Since this is a CBA family-oriented event, we encourage our members and their families to attend. The membership picnic is the Board of Directors' way of saying thanks to all of you who have supported the CBA over the past 16 years. If you are not a member, or if you need to renew your membership, you can do so upon arriving at the Picnic. Please note that at the picnic location, there is not much shade on the grassy area — so please come prepared for hot sun or cool rain, and bring a blanket and/or chairs.

Want to help? Putting on a picnic this size takes some work. If you are interested in volunteering for light shifts (serving beer, running the booth, stage help, BBQ master), or can donate items, please call LeEtta Clark at 360-693-8472, or sign up at the August 7th Membership Meeting at the Melody Ballroom.

Hope to see you all there!
