Milwaukie Festival Daze:
A Big Success!

CBA Participates In
Community Event

Greetings, CBA members! We at Burnside & Sideburn Records have some exciting news for you: We have three new releases to announce! Without wasting any time, we'll get right to telling you about these great new recordings...

Alice Stuart - Can't Find No Heaven (BCD 0044). Alice Stuart broke into the music business in the early '60s, rising rapidly to share stages with such notables as Joan Baez, Mississippi John Hurt, Jack Elliot, Jerry Ricks and Muddy Waters. In 1968, Alice joined forces with Frank Zappa during the formation of the Mothers of Invention, then went on to form her own band, Snake, appearing with Commander Cody and the Lost Planet Airmen and Asleep at the Wheel. Snake featured bassist Karl Sevareid (later in Robert Cray's band) and Bob Jones on drums. Alice has recorded in the past for such label as Arhoolie Records, Fantasy Records and on her own Country con Fusion label. After touring extensively in the '70s and sharing stages with the likes of Albert King, Michael Bloomfield, Elvin Bishop, Bread, Jerry Garcia and Van Morrison, Alice took the '80s off to raise her family, recording several records and playing. Rested and refreshed following the turn of the century, Alice returned to touring, released two more CDs on her own label, and performed at NXNW, SWSW and ROCKGIRL.

In 2001, Alice was signed to Burnside Records; and on June 18th, 2002 she released Can't Find No Heaven, which was recorded at Falcon Studios (Portland, OR) and co-produced by Terry Robb and Alice Stuart. This new CD shows both the electric and acoustic sides of Alice's Blues-laden songs. The CD features Duffy Bishop, Paul deLay, Louis Pain and Janice Scroggins, as well as Terry Robb who makes his debut on bass. The result is a warm, soulful sound from a stateswoman of the Blues, which should put Alice back in the national spotlight.

Terry Robb - When I Play My Blues Guitar (BCD 0045). Terry Robb has played Blues in many forms: acoustic solo, duo, trio, acoustic with his Blues Orchestra and rockin' electric. He's won 13 Cascade Blues Association "Muddy Awards," been inducted into the CBA's Hall of Fame twice, toured with Curtis Salgado, Steve Miller and Buddy Guy, appeared on West Coast Live and the Conan O'Brien show. He's produced a W.C. Handy Award-nominated recording, as well as producing and performing on Let Go, a John Fahey recording that Rolling Stone called one of the top three releases of the year — the other two were Purple Rain and Born In The USA. The question is...what will he do next? When I Play My Blues Guitar, Robb's most recent recording on Burnside Records, marks his fourth release on the independent Blues label and his first-ever solo Acoustic Blues record. When I Play My Blues Guitar features ten original songs with styles ranging from Blind Blake to John Lee Hooker, and eight carefully chosen covers. Each tune showcases Terry's incredibly intricate fingerpicking style, combined with a fine touch — his trademark sound. Songs on this new disc include a tour de force of slide guitar on the medley of three songs set around the classic slide guitar piece Guitar Rag by Sylvester Weaver to the more traditional Country Blues of Tommy Johnson's Bye and Bye."The two songs which are the centerpiece of this new release are the rapid fingerpicking cover of Rev. Gary Davis' ragtime classic Buck Dance, and the beautiful and transcendent tribute, Fahey at Bush Park, which Terry wrote for his dear friend and mentor, the late John Fahey. When I Play My Blues Guitar is quite simply an acoustic celebration of everything Terry has done masterfully over the years.

Burnside Records would like to invite those of you who enjoy a little Roots-Rock with your Blues to check out our newest artist, John Bunzow, on our alter-ego label, Sideburn Records. Sideburn, which is a division of Burnside Records, exists solely as an outlet for some of the finest Roots-Rock music that we can put our hands (and ears) on.

John Bunzow - Darkness & Light (SBN 1007). John Bunzow has been called one the finest Roots writer/musicians on the current music scene. Bunzow's new CD, Darkness and Light, is an 11-song, guitar-driven alternative roots revival that combines Roots-Rock with Blues and Country, along with some of the best lyrics to ever put on paper. A native Oregonian transplanted to Nashville, Bunzow was signed to Liberty with a songwriting deal through EMI, but Liberty folded before his recording Stories of the Years could be released — though not before press and radio got a hold of the promos and they loved it. Darkness and Light includes Richard Bennett (previously with Mark Knopfler), Tammy Rogers, Jimmy Hall (Wet Willie), Anthony Crawford, Allison Moorer and Ray Kennedy.

John is currently on tour in the Portland area and playing with some of Portland's favorite Blues players, Albert Reda (bass), Tom Royer (drums) and Mark Spangler (guitar).

On behalf of Burnside/Sideburn's salubrious staff, we want to thank you for supporting your local independent Blues label. Please check out our Web site at www.burnsiderecords.com for dates on these and all of our fabulous artists.
