|
Greetings
from the Woodshed! The Oregon GI BLUES Music Festival is a fund-raising
resource for charities that fall within our area of focus. Please visit www.oregongiblues.com
for our Mission Statement.
The Make-A-Wish Foundation of Oregon is one of 79 chapters of the Make-A-Wish Foundation of America - the largest, non-profit, wish-granting organization in the world. The Oregon chapter grants wishes for kids throughout Oregon and Clark County, Washington.
The mission is to grant the wishes of children with life-threatening illnesses to enrich the human experience with hope, strength, and joy. As the doctors work to heal children's bodies, the Make-A-Wish Foundation steps in to nurture a child and his or her family with the experience of a wish come true.
For more information, or to refer a child, please call 800-934-WISH or visit www.orwish.org.
Saturday, September 28th, 1st Tech Federal Credit Union Presents "The Matriarch of the Blues," the amazing, the incredible, Ms. Etta James and The Roots Band. Called "a singer of unprecedented power and appeal" by Rolling Stone Magazine, Etta James was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1993. She's been nominated for GRAMMY AWARDS a total of eight times and, in 1995, won for "BEST JAZZ VOCAL PERFORMANCE" for her Private Music album Mystery Lady, a Tribute to Billie Holiday, one of her earliest influences.
Given her remarkably diverse taste, Etta allows for few distinctions between musical genres and her prolific output over the years - touching on everything from Pop to Country to Jazz to Blues - has reflected that eclecticism. "I want to show people that Gospel, Country, Blues, Rhythm and Blues, Jazz and Rock and Roll are all really just one thing," explains the singer. "Those are the different faces of AMERICAN MUSIC, and it's all part of AMERICAN CULTURE."
Here are some facts about Etta James' accomplishments:1999 - James is ranked at No. 19 on the VH1 music channel's list of the "100 GREATEST WOMEN OF ROCK 'N' ROLL," compiled from the votes of more than 300 influential women; 1999 - The Blues Foundation bestows its Fifth Annual Lifetime Achievement Award on Etta James; October 18th, 1999 House of Blues, Los Angeles; 1999 - The Grammy Hall of Fame Awards were established to honor early recordings of lasting, qualitative or historical significance released more than 25 years ago. Inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1999, AT LAST by Etta James (Argo, 1961) R&B.
Etta James has received 12 W.C. HANDY AWARDS, which represents the highest honor given in the Blues industry.
Did somebody say Grammy winner? Oregon GI BLUES Music Festival is a tribute to John Lee Hooker....and staying with that thought, Mr. Hooker influenced most every genre of AMERICAN MUSIC we enjoy today.
Let me break it down for you...FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 27th, OGIBMF will kick off this powerhouse of a weekend with Chris Thomas King. King won three Grammy Awards this year for the soundtrack of Oh Brother, Where Art Thou. If you haven't seen this movie, get on down to your local video store and rent it...it's one you'll want for your collection! Some great music and good laughs!!
Don't think we are done with this feast of a festival...remember what I said a few months ago? "You're gonna want to write this one down in the big book and have the t-shirt to prove it!!"
Coolio, originally scheduled to emcee the event, has agreed to do a performance in tribute to the man who had influence on him as a child. He will do his performance with his full band! I know y'all say this ain't the BLUES, but guess what...it is! HIP-HOP is the evolutionary process of the BLUES. WHEW! SOMEBODY GET ME A DOCTOR.
Did somebody say DOCTOR? Robert Lockwood, Jr. received his second Honorary Doctorate! Cleveland State University honored Mr. Robert Lockwood Jr. with a Doctorate Of Music on May 12th. Be sure to catch Robert Lockwood, Jr. in a rare solo appearance at this year's Oregon GI Blues Music Festival!
