The much-coveted Muddy Award. |
The next General Membership Meeting of the CBA will take place on Thursday, November 6th from 6:30 - 9:30 pm, in the upstairs space of the Melody Ballroom at 615 SE Alder in Portland.
Note that the meeting will be held on a different day this month – Thursday – and will start a half-hour earlier than usual (6:30) and end a half-hour later (9:30). It's all to accommodate the Muddy Awards, our annual ceremony in which we honor the best players in our local blues community, as voted on by the CBA membership.

The Ty Curtis Band, 2008 Journey to Memphis winner, will open the evening. |
The Night of the Muddys traditionally begins with a performance by the previous year's Best New Band award winner, but that got a little complicated this year. Suffice it to say we made a decision to switch it up this time, and we offered the opening slot to the winner of the 2008 Journey to Memphis competition, the Ty Curtis Band. Fortunately for all of us, they accepted. This four-piece cranks out a tight mix of blues, rock and funk, treating their audiences to both original tunes and covers. For some time now they've been playing dates all across the Northwest, and somehow they found time to release their second CD too. All that hard work has earned them a Muddy nomination in 2008 for Best Regional Act.
Following the opening set, we'll kick off the awards ceremony with our special guest emcee Steve Pringle (double-duty blues DJ for both KINK and KMHD) hosting, and CBA staff and friends presenting the awards. It's always exciting to see the awards given out and the local performers enjoying the recognition.

Multiple Muddy recipient Robbie Laws will lead the Muddy All-Star Jam. |
But don't make the mistake of leaving when you see the last award has been handed out! Some would say that's when the party really begins, as the Muddy Awards evening always concludes with the Muddy All-Stars Jam – a one-night-only "superband" of Muddy winners and nominees, with a bandleader who's won at least one Muddy, but usually multiples. The bandleader for this year's closing jam is definitely a multiple Muddy winner – the dynamic and driving guitarist Robbie Laws. Robbie's putting together a powerful group of players who are sure to tear up that stage, so don't miss this final set. It's always a highlight.
Mark the date on your calendar and be there early – the Muddy Awards ceremony is usually quite well-attended, and for good reason! Like every monthly meeting, this is an all-ages, smoke-free event, and non-members as well as members are welcome. Food and beverages are available for your enjoyment.
