The Cascade Blues Association is pleased to announce an exciting new blues event for the City of Portland: the Willamette Delta Showcase. Set to be held at the Aladdin Theater (3017 SE Milwaukie), on Friday, March 3, 2000. This event is aimed at bringing Blues musicians who may never have played in Portland, those who have not performed in the city for a number of years, or those artists that are deserving of more attention. We have pieced together a line-up for this event that is sure to be a crowd-pleaser.
Opening this year's show will be thirty-plus-year veteran of the Phoenix blues scene,
Hans Olson.
Hans will be performing a solo set of guitar and rack-harmonica. He has played with a number of blues greats over the years,
including a two-year stint with Brownie McGhee, filling the spot of
Sonny Terry following the break-up of those two masters.
Hans will be followed by the W. C. Handy Award-nominated blues duet of Paul Rishell and Annie Raines. Perhaps one of the most popular traditional blues groupings of recent years, Paul and Annie are riding strong on their most recent release, "Moving to the Country," on Tone-Cool Records.
Headlining the initial Willamette Delta Showcase will be the ever-exciting
Smokey
Wilson. Wilson's stinging, tasteful guitar licks and
Howlin' Wolf-like vocals are guaranteed to bring the audience to their feet. His
1998 recording "The Man From Mars" received a W.C. Handy nomination as one
of the Best Recordings of the Year, and will certainly provide a focus for
Smokey's performance.
Tickets are now on sale at the Aladdin Theater and all Ticketmaster outlets. Tickets are $18.50 advance, $20 day of the show, $1.00 discount to CBA members showing their cards.
This event is co-sponsored by the Cascade Blues Association and KINK fm-102 Sunday Night Blues. All profits from this event are earmarked for the CBA's Christopher Mesi Scholarship Fund. Please help a good cause and come experience an enjoyable evening of first-rate blues performers.
