Local Blues Artist are Recognized for 2009 Contributions
If you receive Blues Blast Magazine, out of Chicago, in your email or visit the Illinois Blues website, you're probably familiar with reviewer James "Skyy Dobro" Walker. James "Skyy Dobro" Walker, along with D'Arcy "Shuffle Shoes" Ballinger, produce Friends of the Blues Radio show for WKCC radio station, Kankakee Community College, Kankakee IL, and he writes many, many CD reviews for Blues Blast Magazine. "I personally reviewed 52 discs for 'Blues Blast Magazine' and encountered over 140 CDs in 2009, and most of those were 2009 releases."
In Skyy Dobro's 2009 list of "Top 25 CDs & Top 50 Songs for 2009," he rated The Insomniacs - At Least I'm Not With You as the #1 CD and Too Slim & The Taildraggers - Free Your Mind as the #2 CD for 2009. Though released in 2008, Ty Curtis Band - Down on My Luck was slotted at #18. "(Note: Ty Curtis Band was released Sept 9, 2008, but I did not get it until April 2009. It is too good to go unmentioned.)"
In the list of top 50 songs, these great NW performers also get some love -- in fact they got the top three spots: #1 The Insomniacs - Description Blues, #2 Too Slim & The Taildraggers - Bottle It Up, and #3 Ty Curtis Band - Cherry City Boogie. The Insomniacs also showed up at #13 with The Insomniacs (Live) - Stick Around.
Of course we have been lucky enough to already know how good these blues bands are. If you haven't picked up their CDs, it appears you're missing out. Remember to go out and support these and our many other fine blues bands. Show them how much we appreciate their talents, and how lucky we are to have them in our area.
Congratulations to The Insomniacs, Too Slim & The Taildraggers, and The Ty Curtis Band!

In my opinion, and without doubt the opinion of many blues lovers world-wide, Otis Spann is the first and foremost name among blues piano players. Best-known for his time spent with the Muddy Waters Band, he also often worked solo or with other musicians. His album Otis Spann Is The Blues, which resulted from a recording session Spann had done with Robert Lockwood, Jr. and St. Louis Jimmy in 1960, has been long considered a classic and was inducted into The Blues Foundation’s Hall of Fame in 1995. It is through such works that Spann has influenced countless blues pianists since, David Maxwell included.
