Big Monti - Dec. 2011
If you’re looking for something new on Wednesdays, look into Blackwell’s Grubsteak Grill, 1815 NE 41st Avenue, in the Hollywood District. Big Monti, Kelly Dunn, and Dave Kahl will play, from 8 – 11pm, in a setting that is down to earth, friendly, and convenient. Located just a walk across from the historic Hollywood Theater, Blackwell’s is a quick jump of the Banfield and down the street from other great places for Wednesday fare, like Duff’s Garage and the Blue Diamond. There is abundant parking on the street and in the lot next door. Since this is an earlier gig, you can start here and make the rounds, that is, if you can pull yourself away. Monti is a great guitar player, singer, songwriter, and story teller. His bands are always tight and, with Dave and Kelly, this tradition continues. Blackwell’s is a full service bar, with great food and working class prices. Let’s make it happen. Wednesdays are a first step in what they hope will be a new, popular venue for quality blues, roots, and jazz music. For more information, go to www.bigmonti.com or call (503) 288-5164.

I don’t know how he does it, but Curtis Salgado has done what I thought would be impossible. He has created a new album that just very well may have outshined his last release, the Blues Music Award nominated Clean Getaway. The Alligator debut of the soulful blues singer, Soul Shot, is without doubt a masterpiece. There is no lull to be found anywhere on the disc. It all flows so smoothly, much like Curtis’ voice, and touches so many bases that encompass a history of blues and soul music.
