Show Your Love For the CBA Part II - Oct 18, 09
SUNDAY, OCTOBER 18TH ~ 4:00-10:00 PMTHE REFECTORY ~ 1618 NE 122ND, PORTLAND
ADMISSION: MINIMUM $10 DONATION TO THE CBA
Last January, the CBA held a fundraiser to prevent the organization from going broke in the declining economic times. We are not in that same situation now, but we want to make sure that we are stable in the upcoming future. We have just held or will be holding several events that run the CBA a nice chunk of change (Membership Picnic, Muddy Awards & Holiday Party), where we do not receive much in the way of returns on the expenses, so we decided to hold a second fundraiser to ensure that we’re in good standings financially.
We will be returning to The Refectory. It is a large room, but remember how full the space was before we even started last time, so plan on arriving early. The Refectory has promised to open the back partitions giving us even more space (this was not available last time due to another reservation in the room) and they have also stated they will anticipate our large turn-out by staffing up their crew for the night.
There were a number of people who contacted me last time stating how much they wished that they could’ve been a part of that event, but with the limitation on time, we still find ourselves unable to accommodate everybody. We have tried to keep it to people who did not participate before, with the exception of Kevin Selfe & The Tornadoes (after all, this room is their standing Sunday night gig and we’re taking it from them, so we’ll give them their part in the fun, too.
So, here’s who you can expect to see:
4:00 – KEVIN SELFE & THE TORNADOES with special guests DOVER WEINBERG & THE LEGENDARY HORNS (BRAD ULRICH, HEART ATTACK JOE McCARTHY & hopefully DAN FINCHER)
5:00 – THE ROBBIE LAWS TRIO
6:00 – Making his debut appearance in Oregon, the soon-to-be newest member of the Portland blues family, 2008 International Blues Challenge solo finalist JOHN-ALEX MASON, performing his one-man band show!!
7:00 – MYRTLE BROWN'S DESTINY with Special Guest LINDA HORNBUCKLE
8:00 – THE RICK WELTER BAND
9:00 – The long overdue return of JIMMY LLOYD REA & THE SWITCHMASTERS with special guests reported to be JIM MESI, MIKE MOOTHHART, DOUG ROWELL & RANDY LILYA . . . . and word has it that the imcomparable LINDA HORNBUCKLE may be stopping by as well!!
I don’t know if I will continue to call this event Show Your Love For The CBA, but one thing will be for certain, it’s going to be a blues party that’ll kick big time!! As Jimmy Lloyd Rea said, “It’ll be a lowdown hoedown!!”
Hope to see you all there!

CBA President

If you love down-down Southern soulful blues, do yourself a favor and run out and buy the latest disc from Johnny Rawls entitled Memphis Still Got Soul. Rawls consistently releases fantastic recordings, as evidenced this last year with his Blues Music Award recognition for his previous release Ace Of Spades, taking home the prize for Soul Blues Album, while also garnering a nomination for Male Soul Blues Vocalist. And as great as that last album was, I have to say that in my opinion he has far exceeded it with Memphis Still Got Soul. This just may be the finest soul-blues album to come out in some time. It must be heard!
