On Wednesday, April 28th, Music Millennium will be presenting a special Ruf Records Label Showcase featuring two of the finest blues guitarists today in the intimate setting of Duff’s Garage (1635 SE 7th, Portland). The legendary will be making their only Northwest appearance, with each performing full sets of their own.

Coco Montoya and Joanne Shaw Taylor

Over the course of his 30-year career, guitarist and vocalist Coco Montoya's explosive guitar playing and soul-driven voice have propelled him to the upper reaches of the blues-rock world. From his early days as a drummer to his current status as one of the top-drawing guitarists and vocalists on the blues-rock scene, Montoya has forged his reputation through years of hard work and constant touring. Coco Montoya’s latest CD, I Want It All Back, showcases Montoya in his most innovative setting thus far, tapping into his roots of blues, soul, rock, rhythm and blues and doo wop, while showcasing a soulful, passionate vocal sound that will serve as a revelation to those who only know him for his guitar prowess.

If you can imagine the love child of Stevie Ray Vaughan and Dusty Springfield then you are beginning to get a feel for Joanne Shaw Taylor’s mixture of fiery guitar playing, sultry vocals and 100% pure soul. Born and raised amidst the coalmines of Britain’s Black Country, she picked up a guitar and got turned on to the blues as a very young teenager. With her record debut, White Sugar, she demonstrates her soulful mix of roots and pop influences sung in a haunting smoky voice that never leaves you once you hear it. Whether it’s funky shuffles, soulful ballads or the hypnotic hook line of the title track, a burning instrumental, Joanne Shaw Taylor presents her craft powerfully.

Tickets for this extraordinary event are limited to just 100 available to the public and can be purchased for $20 in advance through www.ticketsoregon.com. There will be tickets that may be purchased at the Cascade Blues Association’s April membership meeting that will save the price of the service charge from buying on-line. But plan on buying your tickets early, as this is going to be one night of blues you do not want to miss!
