Okay, the votes are in and they’ve been calculated, so now it’s time to get together and announce the recipients of this year’s Muddy Awards! We will honor those artists, individuals, events and venues who have been chosen on Thursday, November 3^rd in the grand ballroom upstairs at The Melody Ballroom, 615 SE Alder. And what is a celebration of the blues without a little music as well? Awards will be presented in twenty-two categories plus two sets of music, all starting at 6:30 pm.

BillyD_200x300 The night will begin with a set from last year’s Muddy Award recipient for new act, Billy D & The Hoodoos. Billy D is always a terrific showman, mixing his own style of blues, roots and rock for a unique sound. Joining Billy D will be his always sharp rhythm section of Joe Casimir on bass and Vince Adame on drums.

Immediately following Billy D’s set we will set up the screen and start the awards ceremonies. Each award will be presented by a variety of friends of the blues community from the CBA board of directors, local radio personalities and other devoted backers of the genre. Always a thrilling night where a few surprises occur every year with unexpected winners and several first-time honorees. This year’s award also has a whole new design which we believe the recipients will appreciate.

After the awards have been given out, the night does not end there. An all-star band made up of past and present Muddy Award nominees and recipients will follow, this year led by one of Portland’s most favorite acts, Lisa Mann & Her Really Good Band. Besides her band, Lisa has collected an incredible array of some of the finest blues talent in the state, which will include Rae Gordon, Karen Lovely, Suburban Slim, Sonny Hess, Dover Weinberg, Vyasa Dodson, A.C. Porter, Hank Shreve, Kinzel & Hyde, Alex Shakeri, Dave Melyan, Chad Rupp, Dallas Breed, Joe McCarthy and Brad Ulrich, and probably a few others not yet reported to us at press time.

Do not miss out on this exciting night for the blues in Portland and the region. It always draws a large crowd, so plan on arriving early to find a seat. The staff at The Melody Ballroom will be offering dinner selections for those coming to the event directly from work. Come out and celebrate with the newly honored recipients, dance to great music and see good friends. Always a memorable occasion. We’ll see you there!

"32nd Blues Music Awards"

The Blues Foundation

The Blues Music Awards is the premier event annually of the genre. The 2011 showcase was the 32^nd year of celebrating the best in the blues as selected by the members of The Blues Foundation. Held at the Convention Center in Memphis, TN, this past May, the show draws fans from around the world and features performances by many of the year’s nominees and winners. This DVD follows previous releases of past Blues Music Awards and gives a nice impression on the event and music, with every subsequent year being more finely produced making the video an indispensable item to add to every blues fans collection.

The 2011 ceremonies honored musicians who had passed away during the prior year and the tributes paid attention to Robin Rogers, Solomon Burke and Pinetop Perkins. During the concert. Robert Johnson was also recognized for his 100 year anniversary of his birth with a set by Big Head Todd Mohr and a short statement from the Johnson Family.

Performances included on the main portion of the video are intended for public television broadcast and highlight recipients for the year. These include sets from Buddy Guy, Janiva Magness, The Nighthawks, John Hammond, Willie “Big Eyes” Smith, Sonny Rhodes, Reba Russell, Rick Estrin & Kirk Fletcher, Steve Miller, Matt Hill and Bob Corritore. A second chapter also includes performances by nominees such as Magic Slim & The Teardrops, Karen Lovely, Arthur Adams, Eugene “Hideaway” Bridges, Smokin’ Joe Kubek & Bnois King, Walter Trout, David Maxwell, Lucky Peterson and more. The sound and visual quality is excellent.
