Bolt Upright’s new EP ‘UPSTROKE’ got a great reception and we’re excited to hear it on the Portland Blues radio stations. Please call in and request a tune. Lisa Mann - Nov '09

Hey this is Lisa Mann everyone, just want to let y’all know about a very important benefit I’ve been blessed to be a part of. It’ll be at Duffy’s Hangar at 2275 McGilchrist St SE in Salem on Sunday Nov 8. The Sunday jammers have been gracious enough to allow us to take over for the day to raise money for the family of my friend Ashley Willoughby. I connected with her through a songwriting project from the Children’s Cancer Association.Ashley is a young singer-songwriter and actress from Salem. She just turned 18 and has been fighting Ewing’s Sarcoma, a childhood bone/muscle cancer. Her chances for survival are good, but she is still undergoing powerful chemotherapy as well as many other expensive medical treatments. Under the weight of these expenses, her family has fallen two months behind on their mortgage payment. If they get THREE months behind, the bank will go into foreclosure proceedings. This benefit will raise money to fight off foreclosure for as long as possible, and hopefully to get the family current. There are four kids altogether under this roof, it would be a shame to see them lose their home to medical bills.
It’s an all-star line-up, including Ty Curtis, Orvil Ivie and Garry Mezeire, the NW Women’s Music Revue with Sonny Hess, Ellen Whyte, Rae Gordon, Rod Steward and yours truly, MahutmaGumbo, Captain Banks, Cher and the B-Siders and guest jammers to boot. Only $10 at the door, plus raffle tickets will be on sale as well as a silent auction. Again, this is on Sunday, Nov 8 at Duffy’s Hangar at 2275 McGilchrist St SE in Salem, from 3-10pm. Spread the word!!

The Sinners Club - Nov '09
Written by Administrator Thursday, 29 October 2009 06:25
As the holiday season approaches, we are reminded that we have much to give thanks for—family, friends and the joy that music brings to all.The Sinners Club is playing just a few select shows this month to give band members time to relax, reflect and plan for the new year ahead. Highlights include a weekend residency at Scotte’s Imbibery in McMinnville on Friday and Saturday nights the 6th & 7th, plus another road trip to the beautiful Oregon coast on Friday the 20th for a special showcase at Roadhouse 101 in Lincoln City. The night will be dedicated to the memory of slide guitar master Duane Allman, who would have been celebrating his 63rd birthday if not for the tragic motorcycle accident that ended his brief but amazing career in 1971. Be sure to check out Sinners Club guitarist Brian Jones’ amazing lead work on their rendition of the Allman Brothers classic “One Way Out” for a taste of the real deal.
The group also welcomes its newest member, drummer Gene Wood, a 30 year veteran of the local music scene, who brings his tasteful vocal talent and good looks to the stage. Wood and band frontman Dan Golden already work together in the rhythm section of their “side project” The Rolling Tones, the area’s premier tribute band, playing the festival, casino and special events circuit. The addition of a fourth vocalist means a greater variety of songs plus some of the creamiest harmonies that you’ve ever heard! For a sneak preview of things to come, catch them as they break in some of the new numbers at the famous Thursday night open jam session at Mojo’s in Vancouver, hosted by The Sinners Club. For more updates, call The Sinners Club Hotline: (503)649-6366 or visit their website www.myspace.com/jointhesinnersclub.

I recently had the honor of being included in the Sultans of Slide show at Duff’s Garage. Thanks to Franck Goldwasser, who came up with the idea of pairing some of the excellent slide players we have in our town. It was my first opportunity to play a show with Jim Mesi, as well as Franck and Monti Amundson. Ben Bonham did a wonderful job opening with acoustic Delta Blues. Thanks to Duff’s for hosting and to the A&E for Pick of the Week. We had a packed house and tore it up!As a result, Franck and I have decided to start working together. I’m thrilled to perform with a musician of his caliber and experience—two slide guitars that know their way around the Blues.
I am also working with Jolie Clausen on drums and David Shoemaker on bass.
We’re putting together a new CD at Studio 212 in Damascus, where I recorded “Howlin’ Waters” in 2006. This time, I’m wanting to include a few originals—incorporating some rock and roll, as well as traditional Blues.
You can find me every Monday night at Rock Creek Tavern from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m., playing electric Delta Blues. Lots of folks are coming out and we’re having a good time. We’d love to see you. www.myspace.com/bobshoemaker

Hi there everybody! We would first like to start off by saying thank you to everyone who came out to our CD release party for ‘Playing The Game’ at Duff’s Garage on October 2. We were blown away by the size of the crowd that showed up! We had an amazing time playing for you and thanks again for making it a very special night for us.We would also like to say thank you for the four Muddy Award nominations again this year. We feel very honored just to be nominated in a town with such tremendous blues talent! We look forward to seeing everyone and hanging out at the awards ceremony on Thursday, November 5.
As for our upcoming shows, November finds us in and around Portland quite a bit. For a full listing of where you can catch us, see the BluesNotes calendar or visit our websites at www.kevinselfe.com and www.myspace.com/kevinselfeandthetornadoes. And as always, you can catch us at our weekly blues jam Sunday nights at The Refectory from 6PM-10PM.

The Hudson Rocket Band - Nov '09

Greetings Rocketeers! Some of you have wondered why there hasn’t been anything in the BluesNotes about The HRB for awhile. Well, the road to “now” has had many turns. (The loss of our last founding member, the passing of Vince, and so many personnel changes.) Fortunately, that old road led us to a great place with Cordless Cliff, Mickie Will, Gaddis Cavenah, & James Ruby at the helm. The Rocket is flying stronger than ever! Our newest CD “No Cover” is selling well and has met with fantastic reviews. (You can hear it on KMHD!) The band is writing its own material, and the CD reflects this change of direction. Pick up a copy and check it out at one of our shows or www.hudsonrocket.com.
Blues By The Sea was a great show this year and The Hudson’s set was stellar. Many thanks to all that attended and to all those wonderful people that made it happen. It was there that we ran into Hudson, (haven’t heard from him since that incident with the taxi at Trail’s End,) and he was ecstatic about the new and improved Hudson Rocket. He really liked all the new tunes. He said it’s the direction he always had in mind for the band. It was sure good seeing him after all this time, although he didn’t stick around long. Something about Randy Oxford and Billy Stoops taking him for drinks and dinner. Knowing Hudson, we hope their credit cards were paid up!
Come catch the November show at Scottie’s Imbibery in McMinnville on the 21st . We’re looking forward to, as Cordless would say, “too much fun!”
Remember, “We play the Blues so you don’t have to!”

Hello Everyone!I must start out by saying the big news of the month for me has been getting XM 74 radio play on BB Kings Bluesville! What an honor. The shocking thing is the tune Bill Wax chose to play was one I never thought any blues station would touch. It’s our country tinged tune “I’ll Ask The Questions, You Tell the Lies!” He is also spinning “Love Makes Change.” Now, that one I understand, but the other one? Go figure! Ya just never know in this business what floats peoples boats! So you can believe I’ll be watching those blues and roots charts in the coming weeks.
Beyond that, October was a fairly decent month with some good gigs which included a benefit to help get Son Jack, Jr. to Memphis! What a stellar night at The Rockfish in Anacortes, WA! And then, getting to sit back and watch all the bands play was amazing.
November is looking slim for gigs due to the holidays but December picks up again for gigs in Washington and a couple in Oregon which include an interview with Jane Martin Manning on KMHD in Portland. So tune in for that one if you are so inclined. It will be Friday, December 11th, around 6pm, and then we hit the Trails End that same night. So please come down and say hello! In the meantime, have a great month and keep on bluesin’!

Hi everybody! We hope you have had a fun and eventful summer. The band and I have been busy playing gigs and putting the finishing touches on our CD “Playing The Game”. It the midst of all this, Allen found time to get married to Lisa in front of a few friends (well...maybe thirty thousand or so!) on stage at the Waterfront Blues Festival....what a beautiful ceremony! As for our CD “Playing The Game”, the recording consists of 10 original songs that cover a wide range of blues that we hope you will enjoy. We are excited to announce that we will be having our CD release party on Friday, October 2 at Duff’s Garage located at 1635 SE 7th Ave in Portland. The show starts at 9:30pm and the cost is $8. This is a Cascade Blues Association co-sponsored event and members will receive $1 off the cover charge if they present their membership card at the door.
In other news, our Sunday night jam at the Refectory has been going great! We are well into our 2nd year there and it’s seems to get better each week. Thanks to all those who have been coming out and supporting the jam, especially all the wonderful musicians who have shared their talents with us. For those who haven’t made it out yet, the Refectory is located at 1618 NE 122nd Ave., just north of Halsey. It starts at 6pm (great for those of you who have to get up early!) and goes until around 10 or 10:30. There is a nice big dance floor and the Refectory always has some great food and drink specials going on during the jam.
We hope to see you soon and check out www.kevinselfe.com and www.myspace.com/kevinselfeanthetornadoes for other upcoming shows. Thanks!

The Dover Weinberg Quartet - Sep 09
Written by Administrator Tuesday, 01 September 2009 06:15
Now working on their 10th year of Tuesday night musical gathering, the Dover Weinberg Quartet at Duff’s Garage is fast becoming a habit for musicians and fans, alike. KMHD’s Blues Palace host, Tom Addis, has said that this is probably the best unknown band in the area. While the music is blues centered, it can run from blues to bop to country. No two Tuesdays will be the same, except for the fact that these guys obviously enjoy what they are doing, along with the many guests invited to sit in.The DWQ consists of Dover Weinberg on keys, Chris Carlson on guitar, Jimi Bott on drums, and Dave Kahl on bass. Vocal duties are passed around and give a brilliant variety to the night, especially when coupled with instrumentals that range from T-Bone Walker to Charlie Parker or Jimmy McGriff. While Chris is in San Francisco with his wife, Duffy Bishop, for the next few months, filling in for him will be Alan Hager, a consummate guitarist and vocalist who has covered the spot on numerous occasions. Chris will make the trek back home periodically, but in either case the spot is solidly covered.
Music runs from 9pm to midnight (or later). Cover is $2. Duff’s Garage is located on S.E. 7th Avenue, at the corner of S.E. Market Street. Bring your party, bring yourself, but certainly be prepared to have a great time with a lot of your friends. Tuesdays at Duff’s Garage with the Dover Weinberg Quartet will feel like a party in your living room without having to clean up afterward. Oh yeah, your living room probably doesn’t have a full service bar in it.
