It’s November. And in the world of the blues in Portland, that can only mean one thing. It’s Muddy Awards time!

Please join us on Thursday, November 4th, at The Melody Ballroom (upstairs, 615 SE Alder St., Portland), beginning at 6:30 pm, for the 22nd annual Cascade Blues Association Muddy Awards. It will be another sensational night of great music and presentations honoring those musicians, venues, events and people, selected by our members noting high achievements to our blues community this past year. Admission is free for CBA members and $5 for non-members. It’s a special gala, so feel free to dress up a little if you so desire.

Opening the evening will be a performance from the 2008 Muddy Award Regional Band of the Year, Becki Sue & Her Big Rockin’ Daddies. One of the top bands from the Puget Sound area in Washington, they have been delivering their high blend of great blues all over the country and into Mexico this past spring, and recently saw their latest CD, Big Rockin’ Boogie, climb all the way to the #2 spot on Sirius XM’s BB King’s Bluesville 74. A perennial nominee for the Muddys, they’re once again up for the Regional Blues Act honors.

The Awards will begin immediately following Becki Sue & Her Big Rockin’ Daddies’ performance. There will be a total of 22 awards handed out to recipients, presented by CBA board members, local celebrities, musicians and special friends.

Included in the recognitions will be awards named after vocalists Duffy Bishop for Female Vocalist of the Year and Curtis Salgado for Male Vocalist of the Year. These artists have been recognized for consistently being awarded these honors for more than a dozen times each over the first 21 years of the Muddy Awards. They have set the bar and only artists who receive the Muddy in a single category this number of times will be considered for future recognition having the award named for them.

Other Muddy Awards of note will include The Hurley Award, recognizing those individuals working behind the scenes in performance production on stage. Without them, major events would never function. The Back What You Believe In Muddy, selected by the CBA Board of Directors, honoring an individual in a non-performing role who has made a significant difference within our blues community. And the Lifetime Achievement Muddy, chosen by our members recognizing a lifetime’s work in the blues.

Following the Muddy Awards presentation, we invite everybody to stick around for an incredible jam made up of past and present Muddy Award recipients and nominees. This year’s All Star line-up was pieced together and will be led by guitarist Kevin Selfe, who is up for three nominations this year. As of press time, the line-up will include: Duffy Bishop, Karen Lovely, Jimi Bott, Vyasa Dodson, Bill Rhoades, Dave Kahl, Steve Kerin, Phil “Suburban Slim” Wagner, Don Shultz, John Neish, Dover Weinberg, Brad Ulrich, Lloyd Jones, Chris Carlson and Allen Markel. Expect more even more musicians to be added, and maybe a surprise or two. Guaranteed to be one of the best collections of blues artists gathered together at one time anywhere!
